The joyous holiday of Passover has been observed by Jews ever since it was instituted by Moses and Aaron in Exodus 12. It is celebrated in remembrance of the deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt 3,500 years ago.

Passover is also meaningful for Christians who understand its relationship to Jesus and the Christian faith. Luke 2:41-42 tells us that Jesus' parents "went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he [Jesus] was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.”

During the last week of his life on earth, Jesus was in Jerusalem for the holiday. The meal he shared with his disciples the night before he was arrested - the one Christians refer to as the Last Supper - was actually a Passover Seder. In Luke 22:15, Jesus said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer."

The traditional Seder liturgy includes the question, "Why is this night different from all other nights?" In response, the ancient story of deliverance is retold year after year.

Indeed, the night of deliverance from Egypt is different from all other nights in Jewish history. But, this year's commemoration of freedom from bondage in Egypt is also quite different for Israel and Jewish people everywhere. This is the second Passover since terrorists from Gaza invaded Israel on October 7, 2023. Many families will be observing what is supposed to be a very joyful holiday while mourning loved ones murdered by Hamas in the last 18 months of war.

As Jews around the world celebrate ancient Israel's deliverance, and we rejoice that almost 200 of the over 250 hostages taken on October 7th are now free, we are painfully aware there are still 59 people held by terrorists in Gaza. The majority of them are confirmed dead, but Israel believes there are between 20 and 24 still alive.

Therefore, Israel is justified in doing everything necessary to liberate every captive and destroy Hamas' ability to ever again do what it did on October 7. The living hostages should be freed by the terrorists immediately and the dead returned for proper burial in Israel!

Much of the world, including many in the church, has chosen to forget or ignore the atrocities of October 7th and the 59 people still held in horrific conditions in Gaza. But we must not forget or ignore! During this joyous holiday of freedom, we remember those being tortured in captivity and speak out as one to demand their immediate release!
