This year's celebration of the events that occurred during what Christians refer to as Holy Week coincides with the week in which Jews have been observing Passover. The two holidays don't always converge because of differences between the biblical and Gregorian calendars. It is significant when they do because, according to the Gospels, what happened during Holy Week took place in the days leading up to, and during, Passover.
When Jesus made his entry into Jerusalem on the day we call Palm Sunday, there would have been multiplied thousands of pilgrims already gathered in the city for the upcoming celebration of Passover. Furthermore, the meal Jesus shared with his disciples before he was arrested - the one we now refer to as the Last Supper - was in observance of Passover. In Luke 22:15, Jesus said, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”
Luke 2:41-42 tells us that Jesus' parents "went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He (Jesus) was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.” Indeed, Jerusalem was where all observant Jews were supposed to be for Passover, one of three annual festivals for which Jews made - and still make - pilgrimage.
Therefore, in the days leading up to Passover, Jesus and his disciples entered the city where the events of Holy Week would take place. As Christians celebrate what Jesus did that week in Jerusalem, may they remember - with renewed appreciation - Jesus' Jewish identity and the absolute dependency of the Christian faith on its Jewish roots!
A very joyful and blessed Easter to all who celebrate!
